Cow Lounge®
Light, Air, and Flexibility in the Barn
The Cow Lounge® was developed from a clear idea: combining the needs of the animal with the requirements of the modern livestock farmer. In 2001, ID Agro introduced this innovative barn concept in the Netherlands. By maximizing natural daylight and fresh air, the Cow Lounge® immediately distinguished itself from traditional barn systems.
What started as an innovation has grown into a proven concept. Today, more than 400 unique Cow Lounge® barns have been realized across Europe. Farmers value the open, bright design and the flexibility of the barn—features that contribute to both animal welfare and workplace satisfaction.
Thanks to our in-house design and engineering department, every Cow Lounge® is tailor-made. Together with the farmer, we assess the current situation as well as future plans. Due to the relatively lightweight superstructure, it is often possible to construct a new building on an existing foundation.
The modular design allows for easy expansion in both length and width, enabling the Cow Lounge® to grow alongside your business.
Each barn is individually engineered according to current standards, including increased snow load requirements. This ensures a safe, robust, and future-proof structure suitable for a wide range of weather conditions.
The Cow Lounge® also offers extensive options in layout and ventilation. Controlled airflow can be achieved using a Top-Move ridge system or a Cabrio roof. The concept itself is highly flexible, ranging from hill barns to free-stall systems, fully adapted to your operation. The unique cow garden concept integrates seamlessly into this approach.
From design to installation, we manage the entire process. Our installation teams have years of experience building Cow Lounge® barns and often come from farming backgrounds themselves. They understand daily farm operations and take this into account throughout the project.
The Cow Lounge® is more than just a barn—it is a well-thought-out, complete concept. A future-proof solution for farmers who prioritize innovation, sustainability, comfort, and efficiency.
- Abundant natural daylight
- Animal welfare & workplace satisfaction: a comfortable working environment with plenty of fresh air
- Fully modular and easy to expand
The Cow Lounge® is based on a hot-dip galvanized steel structure, combined with a specially developed high-quality synthetic roof membrane that meets strict fire safety standards.
For the façades, a wide range of ventilation systems and material combinations can be selected, including steel cladding, precast concrete elements, or sandwich panels.
Each barn is unique, and every structure is individually engineered. Our designs comply with the same structural standards as traditional barns. In fact, calculations include higher snow loads due to possible accumulation between the arches.
The Cow Lounge® is designed to create a healthy and comfortable environment for animals. With optimal ventilation, abundant natural daylight, and ample space, animals can move freely and exhibit natural behavior.
This improves welfare, health, reduces stress, and enhances productivity.
In addition, the light and open environment positively affects the farmer. The fresh, bright atmosphere creates a pleasant workplace, while the calmness within the herd is a key benefit.
The Cow Lounge® is designed with respect for the surrounding landscape. Its low profile, curved roof, and subtle color scheme allow it to blend naturally into its environment.
Rather than dominating the surroundings, the structure remains visually balanced with the farmyard and nearby buildings. The flowing roofline follows the natural contours of the landscape, allowing the barn to integrate seamlessly.
ID Agro and ID Agro Construct handle the complete design and construction of all Cow Lounge® barns.
With our in-house design and engineering department, we work closely with clients to align the superstructure with their needs, preferences, and future plans.
ID Agro Construct has its own installation teams and in-house capabilities for rolling steel and aluminum profiles.
Other applications of the Cow Lounge®
Although the Cow Lounge® was originally developed for cattle housing, the concept has proven in practice to be suitable for a much wider range of applications. Thanks to its open construction, large free-span design and modular structure, the Cow Lounge® is now used across various agricultural sectors and beyond.
Today, Cow Lounge® buildings are used for goats, sheep, poultry and pigs. In goat and sheep farming, the large free spans offer maximum flexibility in layout. Group pens can easily be adapted or temporarily divided during lambing seasons, without the need for major structural changes. The combination of natural daylight and excellent ventilation contributes to a calm, healthy and comfortable indoor climate.
Within the poultry sector, the concept is widely used for winter gardens and covered outdoor areas for laying hens and broilers. The translucent roofing and open sidewalls create bright, airy spaces that stimulate natural behaviour such as scratching, dust bathing and free movement, while maintaining a dry and well-ventilated environment.
The Cow Lounge® is also highly suitable for loose housing systems and other innovative livestock concepts where animal welfare, ventilation and flexibility are key. Thanks to its modular design, the building can easily be expanded or adapted to future developments within the farm.
Beyond agriculture, the Cow Lounge® also offers strong potential for industrial applications. Its flexible construction and large free spans make it ideal for covering storage bunkers, silage clamps, pallet storage, bulk storage and loading or unloading areas. The translucent roof membrane creates a bright and safe working environment with plenty of natural daylight, while protecting goods and materials from weather influences.
In addition, the organic roof shape and subtle appearance allow the Cow Lounge® to blend naturally into its surroundings. The result is a multifunctional and future-oriented building concept in which functionality, appearance and comfort come together.
